Japan is known for its exquisite craftsmanship, which is also noticeable as far as the art of bookbinding is concerned. In her new book, Petra Paffenholz conveys a lot of interesting facts about Japanese book culture, paper expertise and basic bookbinding techniques. In addition to the classical Japanese stab binding, instructions are given to introduce further binding techniques, such as tortoise shell binding, hemp leaf binding or the binding technique developed by the author, fancy binding. The book bindings are also made following Japanese techniques. They are marbled (suminagashi), stitched (sashiko), dyed (shibori) or sewn using collage techniques (boro). The result is uniquely designed books and notebooks - all in Japanese style!
